PREFACE.

In bringing this Handbook before the public, theAuthor believes that he is supplying a want whichhas been long felt. Much information concerningthe “Preparation and Mounting of MicroscopicObjects” has been already published; but mostlyas supplementary chapters only, in books writtenprofessedly upon the Microscope. From this it isevident that it was necessary to consult a numberof works in order to obtain anything like acomplete knowledge of the subject. These pages, however, will be found to comprise all the mostapproved methods of mounting, together with theresults of the Author’s experience, and that ofmany of his friends, in every department ofivmicroscopic manipulation; and as it is intended toassist the beginner as well as the advanced student, the very rudiments of the art have not beenomitted.

As there is a diversity of opinion as to the bestmode of proceeding in certain cases, numerousquotations have been made. Wherever this hasbeen done, the Author believes that he has acknowledgedthe source from which he has taken theinformation; and he here tenders his sincerethanks to those friends who so freely allowed himto make use of their works. Should, however, anyone find his own process in these pagesunacknowledged, the author can only plead oversight, and his regret that such should have beenthe case.
