In the first part of this HTML book, the combination of vowels in asingle syllable occurring in synæresis and synalœpha is marked with anoverline spanning all the vowels joined, as in “Será alma” in page xxxi. Inthe printed book this was indicated with a curved arch above the letters⁀ similar to the sign used in musical notation for ties and slurs.

Use of the present Anthology in the Spanish classes at HarvardUniversity has shown that Spanish verse appeals to the imagination ofthe English-speaking student. On that account, the editor now venturesto offer this book for general academic use. The volume should not bewithout a certain popular value also, since many poems are included init that through translations have been introduced into Englishliterature, and, like Longfellow’s version of the Coplas ofManrique, have there made their fortune.
Indulgence is asked in cases where the readings of a particular textmay not seem satisfactory. Access to the manuscripts or to rare earlyeditions alone could justify the alteration of passages which even inthe best editions available seem to have faulty readings. The editor hastaken the liberty, however, of changing s to z in theolder texts, where it was clear that the appearance of the former letter(as in rason, desir, etc.) was due to a common mistake ofthe first editors, who confused the z and the cursive s oftheir manuscripts.
Errors of judgment in the selection of the poems were perhapsinevitable. At any rate, the editor does not believe himself exempt fromsuch errors. Of the anthologies of Spanish verse already in existence hehas found it particularly useful to consult the following:
