My Lords,
Your Lordships areintrusted by the greatestand best of Kings, with the important Office ofdirecting the whole Navy ofGreat-Britain; the strongestivsafe-guard to all we possess andinjoy. Since therefore all maritimeaffairs are under yourinfluence and authority, I trustyour Lordships will not refuseto accept the answer of one, whose accusation in print hathalready been addrest to yourHonorable Board. I had thehappiness of being several yearsa purser in the Navy, tho afterwardsunfortunately ingaged underthe command of captain Shelvockein this cruising expedition. As his pretended narrativeis intirely a deception, and hiswhole conduct an indignity to hiscountry, I thought it my duty togive your Lordships a genuineaccount of the man as well asvour voyage; which I have donetruly and impartially, not withouthopes it may prove entertaining. If, my Lords, I am neverto meet with any recompense formy hardships, I have yet the satisfactionof asserting the honorof his Majesty’s commission, defendingthe cause of some of hisinjured subjects; and being devotedto his perpetual interest,to subscribe my self,
Your Lordships
