PREFACE.

The present work hardly needs a preface. Theobject is to present in the simplest form the subjectof the manipulation of india rubber. To mouldand cure the mixed gum but few appliances areneeded, and these can be made at home. The articlesproduced are of more than ordinary utility.These two facts give value to the art and furnish araison d’être for this book. If its instructions donot prove practical it will have missed its object.

For some reason the methods of moulding thematerial are not generally known. Experiment hastaught many the futility of attempting to melt andcast it. While thus intractable by the usual methods,it is the most plastic of materials when properlytreated. Its power of reproducing the finestdetails of a mould, of entering all the intricaciesand undercuttings of a design, cause one to feel apeculiar pleasure in working with so responsive amaterial. It is not saying too much to affirm thatto some readers this book will disclose a long hiddensecret. To make it more generally useful it is writtenivfor such readers, to meet the want of thoseknowing of the subject. It was felt that in followingthis course, and in treating the subject from itsfirst steps, including the simplest as well as mostadvanced methods, the book would appeal to alarger body of readers.

The allied subjects to which some chapters aredevoted will be acceptable to many readers. Thehektograph is given in several modifications. Asubstitute for rubber stamps which stands thesevere usage of the Post Office has very distinctmerits, and the manufacture is accordinglydescribed in de
