Shortly after the death of Michael Faraday, ProfessorAuguste de la Rive, and others of his friends, gave to theworld their impressions of his life, his character, and hiswork; Professor Tyndall drew his portrait as a man ofscience; and after a while Dr. Bence Jones published hisbiography in two octavo volumes, with copious extractsfrom his journals and correspondence. In a review of this"Life and Letters" I happened to mention my thoughtof giving to the public some day my own reminiscencesof the great philosopher; several friends urged me to doso, not in the pages of a magazine, but in the form of alittle book designed for those of his fellow-countrymenwho venerate his noble character without being able tofollow his scientific researches.
