Fancy, if you will, Gentle Reader, that, betweenthe intervals of tale-telling,—the Yule-logstill ruddy upon the visages of your fellow-guestsfrom many lands,—fancy that a quiet travellerdraws out of his side-pocket a little, well-wornpair of books from which he reads some scrapof verse or some melodious Christmas poem.Fancy, too, that, beneath the inn windows, inthe snow outside, an occasional band of theWaits strikes up an ancient carol with voiceand horn, begging, when the music is done, admittanceto the glowing warmth within doorsand a share in the plenteous cakes and ale.
Imagine this, if you will, and choose, fromthe pages to come, whatever of old or new willfit well into the conceit; for not a few carols orlegends lie there which have done service underthe snow-covered gables or by the cracklingwood, and which will help, with their quaintheartiness or simple beauty, to realize the charmof Christmas the world around,—that charmwhich flows from hearty and generous good-willtowards men; which has for its inner lightthe kindly desire for peace on earth.
