THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED
There is in England a large and interestingcounty, mostly green on maps. Wecall it Lincolnshire.
There is a part of that same county whereyou see the gleaming silver of the Wash—sofatal to King John of unpleasing memory—andthe green marshlands are drained by wide dykes, and stakes stand bunched at intervals along thelow-lying shore to break the fury of the sea, atthe great high tides of spring and autumn; andthe river that meanders through the "Deeps," asthese marsh flats are called, has no banks whenthe tide is full, but seems as though its watersbrimmed, and only kept themselves from sloppingover by an amazing steadiness of hand inwhich you are not wise to place implicit trust.
That is "Little Holland."
Where the ground begins to rise a shade, sothat the great mass of dim red buildings seemsto tiptoe in the rolling sea of green, stands thefamous Redlands College; where everyone, fromMiss Conyngham the Head—are you braveenough to ask her?—down to Tiddles the schoolbaby, will have something to tell about the thrillingstory which acted itself round about LittleHolland during Joey Graham's first term in theLower School. And, let me tell you, they areproud of that story at Redlands. Here it is!Gabrielle or Noreen would like to tell it, Iknow; but you'd better let me.
