NOTICE TO PARENTS.
In those intervals of rest which the serious caresand labors of life imperiously demand, a man mayfind the best amusement for himself in efforts forthe amusement of children. This little work andits predecessor, “Rollo Learning to Talk,” havebeen written on this principle.
Parents find it very difficult to employ little children.“Mother, what shall I do?” and sometimeseven, “Mother, what shall I do after I have donethis?” are heard so often that they sometimes exhausteven maternal patience. These little volumeswill, we hope, in some cases, provide an answer tothe questions. The writer has endeavored to makethem such that children would take an interest inreading them to themselves, and to their youngerbrothers and sisters, and in repeating them to oneanother.
The difficulty with most books intended for childrenjust learning to read, is that the writers makeso much effort to confine themselves to words of onesyllable, that the style is quaint and uninteresting,[vi]and often far more unintelligible than the usual languagewould be.
