APE.

Apes play many odd tricks, and try toact like men, for they are very fond ofimitating every thing they see. They arealso very mischievous, and sometimesspiteful, so they should be either tied upin a safe place or well watched.

Apes are a species of monkeys. Theylive in a country called Africa, wherethere are a great many forests, and wherethe trees are much larger than any inthe settled parts of America. The apescan climb to the top of the very tallest8trees, and cling to the branches in safety. They are very quick in their motions, and can fling themselves from tree totree with great readiness, holding on withtheir long arms and legs. In their nativewoods, they are very wild; they goon all fours; and sometimes visit theNegroes' huts and fight hard battles withthe inhabitants, throwing sticks andbranches with great dexterity. They areusually of a dull brown color, but someare black, and others grey. They shouldbe fed upon bread soaked in water, andany kind of fruit that may be convenientto give them; they are very fond of nutsand biscuit, both of which may be giventhem in moderation.
