These pages represent an effort to give somehint of the forces that have made for cultivationin Indiana. While the immediate purposehas been an examination of the State’s performancein literature, it has seemed properto approach the subject with a slight reviewof Indiana’s political and social history. Owingto limitations of space, much is suggested merelywhich it would be profitable to discuss at length.It is hoped that such matters as racial influences,folk-speech, etc., which are but lightlytouched here, may appeal to others who willmake them the subject of more searching inquiry.Only names that have seemed most significantare included; many creditable writersare necessarily omitted.
