My warm thanks are due to Mr. C. T. Atkinson, M.A.,of Exeter College, Oxford, who most kindly readthrough the proofs of the chapter on the Warof American Independence and made some valuablecorrections; and also to Mr. C. Atchley, I.S.O.,Librarian of the Colonial Office, who has givenme constant help.
