Everybody was drunk. The whole battery wasdrunk going along the road in the dark. We weregoing to the Champagne. The lieutenant kept ridinghis horse out into the fields and saying to him,“I’m drunk, I tell you, mon vieux. Oh, I am sosoused.” We went along the road all night in thedark and the adjutant kept riding up alongside mykitchen and saying, “You must put it out. It isdangerous. It will be observed.” We were fiftykilometers from the front but the adjutant worriedabout the fire in my kitchen. It was funny goingalong that road. That was when I was a kitchencorporal.
