PREFACE

This book is intended to give the readeran account of the origin and history ofHallowe'en, how it absorbed some customsbelonging to other days in the year,—such asMay Day, Midsummer, and Christmas. Thecontext is illustrated by selections from ancientand modern poetry and prose, related toHallowe'en ideas.

Those who wish suggestions for readings,recitations, plays, and parties, will find thelists in the appendix useful, in addition to thebooks on entertainments and games to befound in any public library.
