TO THE DESCENDANTS OF ISRAEL.

From the earliest periods a belief has prevailed amongJews and Gentiles, that in one mode or another theSupreme Being has appeared visibly on earth. In theEastern World, Divine incarnations are taught in theBrahminical and other systems.

For the origin of such a belief we must undoubtedlyrecur to the Divine appearances recorded in Moses andthe prophets. Such visible appearances and the doctrineof the incarnation are taught in the Hebrew as well asin the Christian Scriptures.

It is the object of the ensuing pages to show that Hewho truly became incarnate, and is announced as Jesus, the Christ, and also as Jehovah, Immanuel, God with us,is the same who in the Hebrew oracles is often calledJehovah and Elohim, and designated also by officialtitles, as the Messiah, the Messenger, Adonai, the Eloheof Abraham; and that, under various designations, he[iv]appeared visibly in a form like that of man to the Patriarchs, and to Moses, and others. In Him, in accordancewith their Scriptures, the descendants of Israel willat length discern the True Messiah, who took man’snature, and in his stead, and as his substitute, was slaina sacrifice for sin, the Just for the unjust; who rosefrom the dead, and ascended on high in his glorifiedbody; and who will come again, visibly, to sit and ruleas King on the throne of David; to destroy the greatAdversary and his works; to vindicate his earlier administration;to accomplish the ancient predictions concerningthe Seed of Abraham, the land promised as aneverlasting inheritance, and his own sacerdotal, prophetic, and regal offices; and to receive due homage ofthe universe as Creator, Ruler, and Redeemer.

Of him as Jehovah and as the Messenger, it is affirmedthat he led the children of Israel out of Egypt. (SeeExodus ii. and Judges i.) And, after the lapse ofnine hundred years, He himself proclaimed to their dispersedand afflicted descendants: “Behold the dayscome, saith Jehovah, that it shall no more be said, Jehovahliveth that brought up the children of Israel outof the land of Egypt; but, Jehovah liveth that broughtup the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them:and I will bring them again into their land that I gave[v]unto their fathers. For mine eyes are upon all theirways: they are not hid from my face:—and they shallknow that my name is Jehovah.” Jer. xvi. 14, 15, 17, 21.
