PREFACE.

THE RISE AND FALL OF NAUVOO is a companion volume and stands inhistorical sequence to "The Missouri Persecutions." It was written withthe same object in view, viz., "To place in the hands of the youth ofthe Latter-day Saints a full statement of the persecutions endured bythe early members of The Church in this last dispensation; * * * thatthey may be made acquainted with the sacrifices which their fathershave made for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ." AndI indulge the same hope with reference to this book that I did withrespect to "The Missouri Persecutions," viz., that by "becomingacquainted with the story of the sufferings of the early Saints, the faith of the Gospel will become all the more dear to the heartsof their immediate posterity, and all the youth of Zion, for manygenerations to come."[1]
