It has quite recently been stated in an Americanjournal that Herr Dernburg—the German officialapologist to the United States—speaking of theshelling of Hartlepool and Yorkshire watering-places,was convinced that it would ‘bring home tothe English people a keen realization of the factthat every serious attempt to invade England in thepast has been successful.’ Had Herr Dernburgread any connected narrative of the invasions ofEngland we are of opinion that he would neverhave made this statement, for it is obvious thatsince the Norman conquest no successful invasionhas taken place without the active sympathy andassistance of a great section of the population.
