PREFACE
It has not been possible, for lack of space, always to tell the old stories in the originalwords, which are, in almost all cases, thebest. If any readers of this book can geta sight of two big volumes called “Drakeand the Tudor Navy,” by Julian Corbett, they may consider themselves fortunate. Inthem there are the most fascinating reproductionsof pictures of old fighting ships, and old charts or maps of the taking ofCartagena, St. Domingo, and St. Augustineby Drake’s ships. Here the ships are seenapproaching and attacking; the towns areshown, and the soldiers, and the seas arefull of wonderful curly monsters. The oldcharts of the invasion of the Spanish Armadashow the shifting position of the fleets fromday to day, and the books also containmany maps and a fine portrait.
