“Who reads a preface?” Many do not;but jump at once into the middle of abook. But it is well to know somethingabout a book, before reading it; and whoso likely to give you information respectingthe contents of a book as the Author himself?I wish to see the youth of mycountry come forward upon the stage oflife, models of excellence, with charactersformed for the times in which they are toact. How much influence my book mayhave, in securing such a result, I cannottell; but my design in writing it has been,to contribute something toward formingthe character of some of those who are tobe our future electors, legislators, governors,[4]judges, ministers, lawyers, and physicians,—afterthe best model; and, from the kindreception of my former attempts to benefitAmerican youth, I trust they will give acandid hearing to the few hints containedin the following pages. It is intended forboys,—or, if you please, for young gentlemen,—inearly youth, from eight or ten tofifteen or sixteen years of age. It coverssubstantially the same ground occupied bya work for girls issued simultaneously withit; and some of the chapters are identicalin the two books, while others are entirelydifferent, and some partially so. It is thehope of the Author, that every one whoreads it, will strive to be a man, in thehighest sense of the term.
