To A Marriage Under the Terror has been awardedin England the first prize in the Melrose NovelCompetition, a competition that was not restricted to firststories. The distinguished literary reputation of thethree judges—Mrs. Flora Annie Steel, Miss MaryCholmondeley, and Mrs. Henry de la Pasture—wasa guaranty alike to the contestants and to the publicthat the story selected as the winner would withoutquestion be fully entitled to that distinction. Inconsequence, many authors of experience entered thecontest, with the result that the number of manuscriptssubmitted was greater than that in the competitionpreviously conducted by Mr. Melrose.
Among such a number of good stories individualtaste must always play an important part in thedecision. It is, therefore, no small tribute to thetranscendent interest of the winning novel that, thoughthe judges worked independently, each selected AMarriage Under the Terror as the most distinctivenovel in the group.
