This is the only authentic autobiography ofthe Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaevna, fourth daughter of the late Emperor Nicholas IIand the late Empress Alexandra Feodorovna ofRussia.

The Grand Duchess Anastasia furnishes authenticinformation and many previously unpublisheddetails concerning the life of theImperial Family and suite from the days of herchildhood to the date of the murder of herparents and other members of her Family inEkaterinburg on the night of July 16-17, 1918.

Her story is divided into six major parts: theyouthful years, the period of the First WorldWar, arrest and exile, life in Tobolsk, life inEkaterinburg, and the period after the tragedywhich includes her rescue and escape toBukovina.

The life of a Grand Duchess of Russia wasno downy bed of roses. Discipline was imposedby the Tsar and Tsarina, particularly the latter.Study was an essential duty which took manyhours. During the war years there were responsibilitiesconnected with the operation of hospitalsfor the wounded. Always over the Family hungthe fear of the possible demise of the heir tothe throne, the young Tsesarevich and GrandDuke Alexei Nicholaevich, who had inheritedhaemophilia through his Mother.

The Grand Duchess Anastasia rejects vigorouslyvarious accusations directed against eachof her parents. She explains in her preface thereasons for her long submergence and for herpresent re-emergence forty-five years after herreported death.

Her style is brisk and invigorating. Her senseof humor repeatedly delights with accounts oflighter events and anecdotes.

This is an invaluable historical record.
