EDITORS' PREFACE.ToC

In compiling and editing this history of the Chamber of CommerceBattalion, the aim of the editors has been to present such a narrativeas will provide a detailed but not overburdened account of theBattalion's movements and operations throughout the years of itsexistence, and at the same time give a representative impression ofthe various outstanding events which have built up the character andthe traditions of the unit.

In accordance with the wishes of the History Committee, the narrativedealing with Field service has been kept within the limits of theBattalion's share in the campaign, and accordingly no attempt has beenmade to give any picture of the relative positions of the variousother units operating with the 17th, or of the general strategicimport of the actions described.

The chapters dealing with the beginnings and home training, and thosegeneral items in Part III. are founded mainly upon matter supplied byofficers of the unit and members of The Outpost staff. The Roll oforiginal members in Part IV. has been gathered together by Lieut. andQuarter-Master Kelly. The material in the section dealing with theservice of the Battalion overseas has been gathered from the followingsources:—
