PREFACE

THE sub-title, "Personal Reminiscences,"is rightly appendedto this volume. The old saying,"Much of which I saw, and partof which I was," the author can truthfullyapply to himself in connectionwith the interesting and stirring occurrenceshere recorded. He relatesthe events because they were, in largemeasure, personal experiences. Andthe narrative is made up, for the mostpart, of historical matter which hasnot been presented heretofore by anywriter. In other words, it is historyat first hand.

Another and more particular reason[Pg 6]for the preparation of this little volumeis because it is believed by thewriter that these narrations will serveto throw some especially valuableside-lights upon the subject of them.John Brown was one of the mostunique characters in all our Americanhistory, and an original factor in animportant part of that history.

The volume will surely be welcometo all admirers of Brown, and it shouldbe of considerable interest to the generalpublic.

It hardly needs mentioning herethat the standard work on John Brown, giving very fully his life and letters,is that of the Hon. Frank B. Sanborn, who kindly contributes the Introductionto the present volume.

Boston, January, 1905.
