The visit of Alexander to Jerusalem is recorded byJosephus only. The fact that it is not mentionedby Arrian, who had contemporary diaries beforehim, by Quintus Curtius, or by Diodorus Siculus, certainly throws some doubt upon it. But it mustbe remembered that Jerusalem was not moreinteresting than any other Syrian town to thesewriters. Bishop Westcott thinks that Josephus’snarrative may be true, and I am content to makethis opinion my defence for introducing the incidentinto my story.
