PREFACE.
In response to numerous requests from almostevery country in which English is spoken, we havemuch pleasure in presenting to the public this thefirst English-Esperanto Dictionary. The demands forsuch a work became so pressing that it was absolutelynecessary to issue it as quickly as possible. Wereit not for this urgency we would have waited untilthe larger Dictionary was ready, but the knowledgethat the progress of Esperanto would bematerially checked or retarded decided us to issuethis smaller one. The compiling of a Dictionaryis always a difficult task, but the difficulty is increasedin a very great degree when an initial and originalwork is undertaken. Such a work demands careful andthorough research, absolute precision, and much patientlabour. The labour, however, has been lightened bythe good wishes of Esperantists all the world over. Notfrom England alone, but from that Greater Britainbeyond the seas, kindly help has been offered, andgratefully accepted. We have spared no pains in theendeavour to make this Dictionary (within its limits)perfect, and we hope we have succeeded. The busyBriton, who has not time for word-building, will findwithin the following pages every ordinary Englishword, with its Esperanto equivalent. It has been said,and with truth, that with a perfect knowledge of oneor two thousand words anyone can adequatelyexpress oneself—conversationally—on any of theordinary topics of everyday life, and for this reasonwe have taken special pains to select those wordswhich are most in use. The student who possesses aknowledge of the process of word-building can fromthe material within these pages extend such materialto an almost unlimited extent. (For an example ofthis see pages 10-15).
The larger Dictionary is in course of preparation, though some time mustnecessarily elapse before its publication. For this the collaborationand counsel of the most eminent continental Esperantists have beensecured. We shall be extremely grateful
