PREFACE
The studies in this volumeoriginally appeared in the “St. James’sGazette.”  Two, from a friendly hand, have beenomitted here by the author of the rest, as non suapoma.  One was by Mr. RichardSwiveller to a boon companion and brother in the lyricApollo; the other, though purporting to have been addressed byMessrs. Dombey & Son to Mr. Toots,is believed, on internal evidence, to have been composed by thepatron of the Chicken himself.  Afew prefatory notes, an introductory essay, and two letters havebeen added.
The portrait in the frontispiece, copied by Mr. T. Hodge froman old painting in the Club at St. Andrews, is believed torepresent the Baron Bradwardine addressing himself to hisball.
