PREFATORY NOTE

The chapters of this book were writtenweek by week for simultaneous publicationin the “Evening Transcript” of Boston andthe “Mail and Express” of New York, andwere intended to be a kind of weekly chronicleof the course of events out-of-doors, aswitnessed by a natural-historical observer. The title of the volume is the running titleunder which the articles were printed in the“Evening Transcript.” It was chosen asexpressive of the modest purpose of thewriter, whose business was not to be wittyor wise, but simply to “keep the records.”
