PREFACE

The Electric Light possesses the great advantageover gas, in that it can be turned onor lighted from a distance. The customarymeans of igniting gas with a match or taper isboth dangerous and often inconvenient. Theinventive genius of modern times has evolveda means of lighting gas by electricitywhich is both reliable and easy of application. It requires no very complicated devices, nor does it necessitate a deep knowledgeof electrical matters for its installation. The object of the following pages is to enableany one possessing ordinary mechanical abilityto construct much of the apparatus used, or atleast to successfully erect it and keep it inoperation.

We beg to thank the following firms for theuse of illustrations: Edwards & Co., Mott Haven,New York; A. L. Bogart, New York;Wm. Roche, New York; The Electric Gas-LightingCo., Boston, Mass., and The ManhattanElectrical Supply Co., New York.
