In Little Navajo Herder, we have brought togetherin one volume the pictured story of a year in thelife of a little Navajo girl, which originally appeared infour separate books. In the first edition, which wasprepared for classroom use in Federal Indian schools, the stories appeared in both English and Navajo. However, the popularity of Little Herder was not limited tothe child readers of her own tribe. She has found herway into the hearts of Indian children throughout thenation. The universality of her appeal is indicated byincreasing interest in her story by non-Indian children inhome and school. Selections from her books have foundtheir way into dozens of anthologies. This popularitywith those who read only English has dictated this singlevolume edition in English. Again the delightful drawingsby Hoke Denetsosie, a full-blood Navajo artist, are used.
Little Navajo Herder bids fair to find a permanentplace in children's literature, as has Mrs. Clark's earliervolume on Pueblo life—"In My Mother's House." Thisbook is illustrated by a Pueblo artist, Velerio Herrera, andis published by Viking Press.
Other Indian stories by Mrs. Clark have been publishedby the Indian Service for use in Indian schools. Acomplete list may be obtained from Haskell Institute,Lawrence, Kansas.
