AUTHOR'S NOTE

I need scarcely say that in 1915 there was no Passport Office inBucharest, and that so far as I am aware there are no portraits inthis book. If any of the characters achieve the effect ofportraits, it may be due to their wearing uniform, which makesevery one look alike. Further I should like to emphasise that thisvolume is really Book Three of Sylvia Scarlett, and is onlypublished separately on account of the difficulties of production.
