The Translator has been induced to present “TheHistory of the Assassins” to the British Public asmuch on account of the interest of the subject itself,as by a desire to introduce to them a portion, certainlybut a small one, of the works of an author so highlygifted, and of such established reputation, as M. VonHammer. Nor will the present volume be deemedsupererogatory, if it be considered that, notwithstandingthe attention which, of late years, has been in thiscountry so meritoriously devoted to the study ofOriental history and philology, still, but few andmeagre accounts have been afforded of the extraordinaryassociation forming the subject of the ensuingpages, and even those scattered through large andvoluminous works. The Translator deems it unnecessaryto apologize for the notes which he has appended,believing that their curiosity will plead his excuse.
It may be proper to remark, that the Translatorhas thought it advisable to adapt the orthography ofthe proper names to the pronunciation of Englishreaders: in this, he has been for the most part guidedby Sir William Jones’s Persian Grammar, and thevery excellent Turkish one of his late accomplishedand lamented friend, Arthur Lumley Davids; he hasonly, therefore, to state, that
