PREFACE.


The following Narrative was taken entirelyfrom the lips of Peter Wheeler. I have in allinstances given his own language, and faithfullyrecorded his story as he told it, without anychange whatever. There are many astonishingfacts related in this book, and before thereader finishes it, he will at least feel that

“Truth is stranger than fiction.”

But the truth of every thing here stated canbe relied on. The subject of this story is wellknown to the author, who for a long timebrake unto him “the bread of life,” as a brotherin Christ, and beloved for the Redeemer’ssake. There are, likewise, hundreds of livingwitnesses, who have for many years beenacquain’ted with the man, and aware of theincidents here recorded, who cherish perfectconfidence in his veracity.

He has many times, for many years, relatedthe same facts, to many persons, in thesame language verbatim; and individuals towhom the author has read some of the followingincidents, have recognized the story andlanguage, as they heard them from the hero’slips long before the author ever heard hisname.
