The following pages originally appeared as magazinearticles. In both England and America the papers were favorablyreceived; and as the public has not heard the last of the Friars in thePhilippines, it seemed worth while to reproduce them in the morepermanent form of a small volume, making such corrections and additionsas might be deemed advisable. Whatever may be the shortcomings of thebook, there is a real and pressing need for the information itcontains, and this need must remain the excuse for its imperfections. Afair consideration of the facts it presents is confidently expectedfrom a people whose love of justice is almost proverbial: Truth shouldhave nothing to fear from Americans.
